The Christy Ring Cup and Nicky Rackard Cup in hurling and the Tommy Murphy Cup in football were new competitions introduced to the GAA calendar between the years 2004 and 2005 to cater for lower and middle ranking teams and give them something to play for.

After a few years it was felt that an awards system like the All-Stars should be put in place, hence the Championship teams were formed.
